Ingredients

Fruits

  • 4-5 pieces apples (Granny Smith and sweeter apples) (peeled and chopped into 1/2-inch pieces)
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • Pinch kosher salt
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • Pinch kosher salt
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, cold and diced

Optional Topping

  • 1 cup chopped toasted pecans or walnuts (decrease flour by 1/2 cup if using nuts)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a shallow casserole dish.
  • Peel and chop apples into 1/2-inch pieces; toss with lemon juice.
  • Add vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, and cornstarch; gently mix.

Notes

You can add chopped toasted pecans or walnuts to the topping for extra crunch.
